Island Grown in the San Juans celebrates the bounty of farms and locally-grown food in the heart of the Salish Sea
Smell the briny breeze and look out over a beautiful bay while shucking oysters straight from the beach. Wander fields of lavender and take a distillery tour to taste gin flavored with island-foraged botanicals. And when you get home, just opening that jar of heritage preserves or brewing a pot of lavender tea will bring your island experiences back.
There are many places you can find local agricultural products, from farmers markets on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan Islands, shellfish farms, wineries, farm stands, food co-ops and more.
Look for the Island Grown Seal
Island Grown in the San Juans is a membership organization that is committed to upholding high standards for quality farm products that are good for our community, our lands, our local economy, and promotes a sustainable future. Certified farms use organic, humane and conservation practices. Business such as restaurants buy at least 10% of their ingredients from farms within the county and for value-added products at least 95% of the defining ingredient is locally sourced. Blossom Grocery measures the quality of their products by their food miles, certified organic status, fair trade status, producer ethics, affordability, simplicity, freshness, and suitability for islanders’ needs. This well-stocked natural foods store carries many Island Grown foods and farms, as well as hand-selected organic products from around the world.
Orcas Food Co-op
The Orcas Island Food Co-op is a full-service grocery store focusing on locally grown and organic products. All produce is organically grown with many offerings from local farmers. The deli makes all dishes from scratch with the same high-quality products available in the store, offering made-to-order sandwiches and salads as well as a variety of scratch-made entrees.
Girl Meets Dirt
Girl Meets Dirt Archipelago Preserves specializes in single-varietal preserves made from local heritage orchard fruit. Grown by small family farmers & homesteaders - many varietals come from trees that have been producing bounty for over 100 years, and some are exclusive to Orcas. Stop by the tasting room during normal business hours to say hello and to purchase preserves, or, come taste at the farmers’ markets.
The Kitchen has a farm-to-table Asian-influenced menu, featuring fresh organic produce, fish and meats from Orcas Island farms. Located in a lovely courtyard setting in the heart of Eastsound, The Kitchen is a very informal, walk-up counter service, with picnic style service-ware. The Kitchen is proud of their commitment and contribution to the local food movement, supporting island farmers and organic food production.
Buck Bay Shellfish
Buck Bay Shellfish Farm offers fresh locally caught crab, prawns, salmon, halibut and other seasonal seafood. Buck Bay offers their own gourmet oysters and clams as well as organically grown vegetables. Come and shuck a few at a picnic table overlooking beautiful Buck Bay.
Doe Bay Cafe
The waterfront Doe Bay Café is dedicated to celebrating the unique seasonality, flavor and freshness of Orcas Island farms, foragers and fishermen with every plate. Chef Jon Chapelle and his crew are committed to creating delicious and nutritious food sourced almost entirely of organic ingredients from the one-acre seed-to-table garden, neighboring farms and orchards, and including specialties from fair trade and small-scale regional producers.
San Juan Island
Coho Restaurant, in Friday Harbor Washington, serves Island grown Pacific cuisine with a Mediterranean flair. Coho’s Chef creates exciting menus developed around the seasonality of fresh ingredients from the surrounding Islands.
Cask & Schooner Public House
Cask & Schooner is a rustic island pub serving casual Northwest gourmet fare, offering a sense of place by showcasing the bounty of the islands. From local farm produce, meats and seafood, the abundance and beauty of the San Juans is on full display, with a nautical atmosphere and a view of the quaint Friday Harbor waterfront.
The Market Chef is an artisan deli, cafe and catering company utilizing island-grown and produced vegetables, fruits and meats. Cooking entirely from scratch, every day they offer unique sandwiches on baked-daily breads, organic salads and a constantly revolving deli case filled to the brim with eat-in or take-home entrees and side dishes.
San Juan Island Food Co-op
San Juan Island Food Co-op sources responsibly, sustainable & organically produced foods. At least 50% of this shop's grocery offerings are local and regional, including pastured meats and poultry, wild-harvested fish, farm fresh produce, eggs, cheese and milk products, and much more.
Pelindaba Lavender Farm
Spread over 25 beautiful acres with lake and Olympic Mountain views, Pelindaba Lavender Farm has become one of the San Juans' most popular visitor destinations. More than 200 lavender-based, botanical, culinary, personal care, therapeutic, household and pet care products are handcrafted and sold on-site, as well as at the Pelindaba Lavender Friday Harbor Product Gallery.
