Fall is a time to Savor the San Juans

Enjoy a harvest of locally grown food, take in a farm tour, film festival, or kayaking tour in September, October and November

What's the weather like in the San Juans in the fall?

With an average daily temperature of 66 degrees in September, 58 in October and 50 in November, autumn in the San Juan Islands is a beautiful season, with many sunny days and some overcast or rainy days. Fall is a good time to pull on your favorite sweater and go for a leisurely hike in the woods or have a bonfire on the beach. The San Juan Islands farm tours on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan are a wonderful way to enjoy a fine fall day. An overcast morning may turn into a beautiful sunny afternoon—or the other way around—so be prepared with both a light jacket and a heavier raincoat.

Tips for getting here in the fall

Fall is a wonderful time to take a drive to Anacortes on a beautiful fall day and catch a ferry to the San Juans. It is always a good idea to make a reservation if you plan on driving onto the Washington State Ferry. You can also fly by airplane or seaplane, or take a foot-ferry with the San Juan Clipper from Seattle in the early fall, but check their schedule to see when they stop running for the season. Check out our Getting Here page for information on the many ways to travel to the islands all year round.

Savoring fall in the Islands

Things to do in autumn on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands

September, October and early November are some of the best months to visit the San Juan Island. Savor the San Juans is a showcase of the fantastic farms and foods in the islands, with farm tours on each island, wine dinners, beer tasting events, film festivals, and more. In October, the Orcas Island Film Festival brings award-winning feature-length films to Eastsound, and early November's Friday Harbor Film Festival is an intriguing collection of documentary films about the Pacific Rim and beyond. Hops on the Rock is Orcas Island's new beer festival, with dozens of breweries from around the Northwest pouring tastes of their best lagers and ales.
