How to Use Transportation in the San Juan Islands

Tips and tricks for getting around the San Juan Islands. Did you walk on the ferry or arrive via plane or private boat? There are plenty of ways to get around Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Island without your car.

San Juan Island has the most transportation options of all the islands if you're leaving your car behind. Arrange for a taxi to pick you up near the ferry, or enjoy scenic rides on the transit or trolley. Make the ride an adventure by renting a moped or scoot coupe from Susie's Mopeds, or get in your workout for the day and rent bikes.

San Juan Transit runs from May through Labor Day, making scheduled stops at Scenic Byway sites and other attractions including Lime Kiln Point State Park, English Camp, Roche Harbor, and more. In addition to a regular route, the transit also offers tours and charters. Find up to date schedules and routes on their website.

Orcas Island offers a few transportation options for travelers on foot. To get from the ferry landing to Eastsound (the main village), you'll need to arrange a taxi or ride the seasonal San Juan Island Transit. Once in Eastsound, bike rentals and car rentals are available.

Check out Orcas Island Rental Car for convenient travel around the island. They offer year-round rental cars, mini-vans, convertibles, and 15-passenger vans. With prior coordination, they offer free pickup and return anywhere on Orcas Island. Try their famous CD audio tour to get a full experience of Orcas Island.

Lopez Island has the least amount of transportation options. Arrange for a taxi to pick you up near the ferry, or walk the mile into Lopez Village where you can rent bikes.

Lopez Bicycle Works is located near the Lopez Islander Resort, about four miles from the ferry landing. They are open seven days a week, from May to September each year.
