ORCAS ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUMS
The Orcas Island Historical Museum in Eastsound has a variety of permanent and rotating exhibits that focus on different aspects of Orcas Island history. Some of the current exhibits are Industry, Homestead Family, Power of Community: Electrifying the San Juans, and Bison antiquus, in which we have an original 14,500 year-old bison skull that was found on Orcas. The unique construction of the Museum - a series of six cabins, additional display rooms, and a large Main Gallery - create a dynamic space and a feeling of being truly immersed in history.
In 2011, the Crow Valley School Museum was donated to the Historical Society by Bud McBride and Richard Schneider. The School Museum is a step back in time to the late 1800s, furnished with mostly original pieces from the classroom days. The displays explore rural education in the San Juan Islands, and the one-room schoolhouse is furnished with mostly original pieces from the classroom days.
Orcas Island Historical Museums steward and operate both museums under its care, and welcome thousands of visitors every year.
