The Whale Museum is launching a new Junior Marine Scientist Camp for kids! This multi-day camp will take place on August 7, 8, 9 and 10, and will give kids a chance to learn about whales, seals, sea lions, and salmon through fun activities, presentations, stories, and specimens. The camp ends in a sleepover at The Whale Museum the night of August 9.
This camp is designed for children between the ages of 7 and 14 and is broken into three parts:
Pinnipeds Day on August 7, Cetaceans Day on August 8, and the sleepover (Pod Nod) the night of August 9. Parents can register their children for individual days or the entire camp program for a discounted rate.
Pinniped Day will go from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on August 7 and will teach children about local seal and sea lion species before letting them build a Stellar Sea Lion skeleton. There will also be pinniped-themed activities and games, pinniped fur, whiskers, teeth, and bones to see and touch, and pinniped-themed stories and crafts!
Cetaceans Day is scheduled from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on August 8 and will give children a great introduction to the world of cetaceans! Our instructor will talk about local whale, dolphin, and porpoise species, and then children will be guided through building a Gray Whale skeleton, play whale-themed activities and games, see and touch cetacean specimens, and experience whale-themed stories and crafts.
The camp will conclude with a sleepover at The Whale Museum from 6:30 PM on August 9 to 8:00 AM on August 10. This sleepover is themed Fish Tales, and will teach kids about salmon and their connection to Southern Resident killer whales. There will be salmon-themed activities and games, including Japanese fish printing, and salmon specimens to see and touch! When it gets darker there will be a flashlight tour of The Whale Museum, salmon-themed stories and crafting, and a movie! Snacks and breakfast will be provided.
Registration for the whole camp program is $200 per child. If a parent chooses to register for individual days instead, the August 7 and 8 activities will be $50 per child per day, and the sleepover night will be $150 per child. Discounts are available for members of The Whale Museum or the Salish Sea Association of Marine Naturalists.
Please register no later than July 31! The maximum number of participants is 25 children, and these spots are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
