Lopez Island Bicycling

Lopez Island is the recreational cyclist’s paradise. The least hilly of the San Juans, but by no means flat, it allows for a leisurely day in the saddle. Before you go, check out our driving or cycling tour of this beautiful island.

Bring your own, or rent bikes from Lopez Bicycle Works or Village Cycles located near or in Lopez Village, where there’s every type of bike available—from road to mountain to cruisers, as well as kids’ bikes, tandem bikes and recumbents.

Once you’re ready, have stocked up on requisite picnic supplies in the village, and stopped by the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce for suggested routes and maps, head out and explore.

Lopez has water vistas at the north and south ends, and you’ll also pass plenty of farmland and natural areas—if you’re here in the late summer bring a bowl and pick blackberries in various spots.

Don’t miss the Shark Reef Sanctuary on the west side of the island, where a short 10-minute hike through a forest will lead to rocks where you’ll get views over the water and an almost certain seal (and perhaps sea lion and otter) sighting—just be sure to follow the path around to the left.

On the east side of Lopez Island is Spencer Spit State Park, so called because of the lagoon-enclosing sand spit on which it rests.

One of the prettiest areas on Lopez Island is Watmough Bight in the southeastern part of the island. Here you’ll get fabulous views of Mount Baker and the Cascade Mountains, or look down into the water to see purple starfish and jellyfish. This area’s not marked on the Lopez map as a park but take it from us, it is worth taking this road less traveled.
