This is a compelling documentary about Tim DeChristopher, a student at the University of Utah, who in 2008 disrupted a highly disputed Utah BLM Oil and Gas lease auction, effectively safeguarding thousands of acres of pristine Utah land that were slated for oil and gas leases. Not content to merely protest outside, Tim entered the auction hall and registered as bidder #70. He outbid industry giants on land parcels (which, starting at $2 an acre, were adjacent to national treasures like Canyonlands National Park), winning 22,000 acres of land worth $1.8 million — with no intention to pay for them — before the auction was halted.

What better way to brighten up a Northwest February than a romantic comedy the New York Post calls a “breath of fresh air” offering “a sweetness and decency that’s become rare at the theater.”

A collage of short plays within a play, Almost, Maine takes us to…well, Almost, Maine on a cold clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, bringing with them magic. Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded.

On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s.Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.
