November is National Native American Heritage Month! The members of Stewardship Network’s Tribal Relations Engagement Group have been working collaboratively to provide a 3-day interisland screening of FISH WAR in partnership with Friday Harbor Film Festival.
2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the controversial Boldt Decision, which granted 50% of the catch to Indigenous fishermen in Washington State.
FISH WAR tells the story from the beginning, starting with the original 1850s treaties and their subsequent violation, and the fight to restore treaty rights, culminating in the Boldt Decision. It also tells the story of the ongoing Indigenous-led environmental and legal fight to preserve the dwindling salmon populations and their at-risk habitats.
“The Fish War isn’t over. Instead of fighting over fish, we are fighting for the fish-to keep them on this planet” – Willie Frank III, Nisqually former chairman & son of Billy Frank Jr
