Traveling with Pets

Four-legged friends get the royal treatment in the San Juan Islands

There are many hotels, inns and bed and breakfast inns that have pet-friendly accommodations in the San Juan Islands. You'll find dog parks on San Juan and Orcas Island, and many shops in Eastsound, Friday Harbor and Lopez Village have water bowls on their sidewalks. We hope you and your four-legged friend enjoy your stay!

If you are traveling with a pet, book your room in advance and let the staff know of any extra needs you may have. Be prepared to pay a small pet deposit to cover cleaning costs. Many of our lodgings have special pet packages that include yummy treats - so be sure to ask!

Your pets are welcome on the Washington State Ferries, as long as smaller dogs are kept in crates at your table or booth, or outside on the observation deck. Dogs riding the ferries must be kept on a leash at all times when out of the car. If you are taking your larger four-legged friend to the passenger deck, be sure to take the most direct route outside.

Some local transportation companies, including San Juan Transit, allow pets on-leash in their vehicles once you arrive in the islands.

The San Juans are known for being very dog-friendly. Take your fur baby on a hike, a walk down the beach, or a stroll through the sculpture park. Just be sure to keep that leash on! There are several off-leash parks for your energetic pooch, and many attractions welcome them to tag along. Leave your furry friends at home if you're headed to San Juan Island Vineyards or farm activities. Call ahead to your venue or activity with any questions about pet policies.

There are many wonderful photo ops for taking pictures of the “entire” family and if your pet needs a drink, just ask - a water faucet or bowl is usually close by!

If you have to bring your four-legged family member to dinner, ask for outside seating. Many restaurants offer options for you and your pet to comfortably enjoy your meal without disturbing other patrons. Your pet is bound to find their own favorite stops in town - as many local business keep treats on hand!

General Pet Tips

Your pet will love the San Juans almost as much as you! With plenty of outdoor activities and pet-friendly indoor stops, the islands are a pet paradise! As you and your fur baby travel, be sure to keep these things in mind:

  • Bring your own dog dish and water bottle to the trails.
  • Always pick up after your pet and use designated trash cans to dispose of their waste.
  • Keep your dog on a leash unless visiting a designated off-leash park.

Be sure to share your adventures on social media with us! We love seeing you and your "entire family" enjoying the islands!
