The season of new films is well underway and Orcas Island Film Festival is celebrating their fifth year anniversary by offering a spring, International 6-film Mini-Fest in advance of the annual October festival dates, October 4-8.

OIFF film curator Carl Spence has been busy scouting the hottest new films and he’s come up with a powerful lineup that local film buffs have come to expect from him. Carl has chosen 6, new titles from the worlds top film festivals from 5 continents and 4 countries spanning the genres of comedy, thriller, romance, road-movie and pure drama. “It’s a great year for films and it’s exciting to offer these up for our island film lovers,” says Spence.

Feature films include;

ON CHESIL BEACH (USA) Drama/Romance starring Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe award-winning actress Saoirse Ronan.

BEAST (UK) Drama/Thriller.A Toronto FF prize winning psychosexual thriller with outstanding lead performances.

DEATH OF STALIN (UK), Hilarious satire with an award-winning cast.

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE (USA) Drama/Mystery- Winner Cannes 2017 Best Screenplay and Best Actor Awards. 

GABRIEL AND THE MOUNTAIN (Brazil) Drama/travel - Won the top prize at Cannes Film Festival’s Critics eek.

SWEET COUNTRY (Australia) Crime/Drama - Winner of competition awards at Toronto & Venice film festivals.

New for this year is expanding the festival to five days. We will be starting with an opening night party on Thursday, October 4th, followed by two opening night films and a full day of films on Friday, Saturday, Sunday through Monday, Oct. 8 at the Sea View Theatre and The Orcas Center. Both venues will be equipped with state-of-the-art DCP Projection and Sound Systems. There will also be nightly parties and panels throughout the festival. OIFF has delivered films that have garnered a total of 34 nominations and 7 Oscars at the Academy Awards and attendees will see these films before their official theatrical release. OIFF provides a unique opportunity for filmmakers and film lovers to connect and share the cinematic experience in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
