Great Island Grown Festival

October 3, 2013
Admission Information:

CELEBRATE THE HARVEST!  Join us for the first two weeks of October for The Great Island Grown Festival, offering a rare glimpse inside the unique world of food and farming in the San Juan Islands. Find out why Lonely Planet calls the San Juans “The Gourmet Archipelago.” Come together with farmers, restaurants, the island community, and visitors to celebrate a vibrant farming community, pastoral landscapes, food, and the island way of life. Enjoy a variety of events, classes and workshops including a tour and lunch at a shellfish farm, a chili cook-off with local ingredients, old island farm tours, farm-to-table feasts, sheep dog demonstrations, farm-scape watercolor workshop, apple and vineyard harvests, a pig-roast, farm bike tours, cheese, wine, cider and gin tastings, and more. It’s bound to be a deliciously good time on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands. Some highlights include:

Lopez on the Halfshell (Friday, October 4th): Visit the Sweetwater Shellfish Farm on Lopez to see how oysters, mussels, and clams are raised, then taste them, raw and cooked—there’s nothing fresher than this!

Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade (Saturday, October 5th): Tractors, old farm trucks, goats, horses and more! This old-fashioned parade has it all! If this home-grown parade production of island farms and farmers doesn't turn your head, what will?

Going Whole Hog! (Sunday, Oct 6th): Join Chef Christina Orchid for a full day of culinary events at Red Rabbit Farm, centered on their pig: classes in butchering, roasting, and preserving pork will culminate in a mouth-watering pig roast.  And more: 'Go for the Gold' in the family fun filled Farm Olympics!

At Westcott Bay Ciderworks and San Juan Distillery, tours and tastings of cider and distilled spirits as well as an apple picking party will be held on select weekends in October.
