Considered to be the most important African-American cultural contribution to the history of art in the US, the Quilts of Gee's Bend are moving, powerful and abstract masterpieces. Several artists across many mediums have been invited to express their own dialogue with the women and work of Gee's Bend in this exhibit, displaying one of the famous Gee’s Bend quilts alongside modern works inspired by the original quilts.

Artists include Mary Lee Bendolph, Laura Petrovich-Cheney, Corrine Riley, Ken Kelly, Jylian Gustlin and Lucinda Carlstrom, to name just a few.

The 2018 theme for SJIMA is "The Female Gaze The Woman as Visionary and Creator." focuses on a select group of dedicated, innovative and insightful artists who bring a feminine perspective to their creations and our experience.
