The Wheel of the Year Series: Rituals of Meaning-making for Community and Individual Health, Kinship, and Belonging
About this series: Join Holly Davis Borrero and Kari Koski of Kari's Elixers for a spring Gather & Make Workshop/Shareshop at the Alchemy Art Center every 6 weeks honoring the 8 Sabbat days to share and learn about each other’s nature-based Wheel of the Year rituals and to create new ones. We will gather to learn and craft together in accordance with the seasonal rhythms.
This class takes place in the Alchemy Dome.
About the Wheel of the Year: The wheel of the year refers to eight days of observance (commonly called Sabbats) that are aligned with significant natural happenings during the six seasons of nature, roughly every six weeks. Each of the 8 Wheel of the Year days holds special significance and are mirror opposites in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Different cultures have different names for these days, along with commonly held rituals and symbolism.
We seek to come together every 6 weeks to share and learn from each other about our own nature-based Wheel of the Year rituals and to create new ones. We will gather and make crafts honoring seasonal rhythms that can be used individually and in community rituals. During our time together we hope to create a community Wheel of the Year network of rituals and celebrations to establish meaningful island life and connect more deeply with the world around us and each other, throughout the seasons.
Participants are invited to help create and attend community Wheel of the Year celebrations throughout the year, outside of this workshop.
The six seasons of nature correlate with the natural life cycle stages of life/death/re-birth, a continuous pattern with no real beginning or end. Pausing to observe and develop a deeper relationship with ever-changing ecological systems helps remind us that we are creatures of nature ourselves and our shared experiences of birth, growth, decline, and death unite us with other beings in the natural world, creating kinship and belonging.
This is a course to feed the maker's spirit with inspiration and creativity for both fantastical and practical uses, as we honor the Wheel of the Year. We will invite the universality of the archetypes and animism to make meaning for ourselves and our communities and align deeply with the rhythms of our own somatic experiences to guide us in relationship to the natural world.
