Virtual Author Talk with Robin Lee Carlson, Author & Natural Science Illustrator of The Cold Canyon Fire Journals

When the nature reserve at Cold Canyon went up in flames— a casualty of California’s raging fire seasons—Robin Lee Carlson embarked on a five-year journey to understand the legacy of the burn. What she saw challenged prevailing assumptions about the destructive impact of wildfire, and with a new fire season on the horizon, her debut book The Cold Canyon Fire Journals opens our eyes to see that beneath the charred landscape and beyond our despair lies another story. Drawing on natural science, years of patient observation, and richly realized field sketches, Carlson’s study of the canyon reveals how wildlife survives and thrives in the crucible of wildfire. Helping us to see that fire is more than merely a destroyer, The Cold Canyon Fire Journals shows us that fire fits seamlessly into the natural world’s normal and necessary patterns of change. In this presentation, Robin will talk about how her book began as a nature journaling journey and developed into an exploration of art, ecology, and fire in the Western US. She will guide participants in a virtual field trip, with sketching demonstrations in a burned landscape and at a controlled burn. The presentation will be interactive throughout, with opportunities for participants to sketch along and to ask questions about the book and Robin’s process. Bring paper, pen, and paint or colored pencils if you’d like to join in! This webinar is free and open to the public. For more information, call (360) 378-4710 ext.30.
