San Juan Island, as with many of the other islands in the San Juans, has a long history of human habitation, including the period of pioneer settlers arriving from the American mainland via Europe and beyond. Some of those island settlers built farms, businesses and homes. In most cases, little remains of these efforts. One of the earliest settler families are the Sandwiths who left a beautiful orchard and remnants of their homestead near English Camp.
This 1.5 mile round trip walk will introduce you to the Sandwiths, their orchard, and the life of pioneers on the islands in the 19th century.
