Indian Island, Eastsound, WA 98245

A small island in East Sound (just off the shore of the village of Eastsound on Orcas Island), Indian Island was once part of a large Coast Salish village complex. The island was a vital part of village life, and was used for drying and smoking clams and growing camas (Camassia leichtinii), a Salish Sea blue-flowering plant with bulbs that turn sweet and sticky when properly roasted. Today, it’s a unique patch of biological diversity on just 1.5 acres of rock surrounded by tide pools and submerged eelgrass meadows, maintained by volunteers who offer tours and information during low tide.
