Food, Farms & Artisan Producers
Fresh, local food and farms have been an essential part of island life in the San Juans for generations. Experience a simpler time as you eat fresh oysters, clams and crab overlooking a shellfish farm at sunset, stroll through purple fields of culinary lavender, or sip wine in a vineyard garden. Pick up salad greens, fruits and vegetables or fresh eggs for your breakfast at one of the islands’ many roadside farm stands.
The range of farm-to-table experiences is almost endless, from bed and breakfasts and country inns nestled next to a farmer’s garden, to self-guided or guided farm tours, and bustling farmers markets on Lopez Island, Orcas Island, and the San Juan Island Farmers' Market at Brickworks in Friday Harbor. All year round you’ll find quality local products, educational activities and culinary events, and you’ll experience the sense of community shared by island growers, ranchers, winemakers, distillers, brewers, chefs and other agricultural artisans who invite you to share the bounty of the islands.
Festivals and Fun
Enjoy the harvest throughout October, with Savor the San Juans, or join in year-round food and farm events. Visit new alpaca babies in the springtime, or visit an orchard and taste fresh-pressed cider in the fall. Explore some of the historic barns that you can see as you drive around the San Juans.
Learn from the Locals & Farm Stays
Meet local farmers and choose from a range of classes on seed saving, beekeeping, fermentation, cooking with local foods, mushroom identification and more that are brought to you by farms and organizations throughout the islands, such as Orcas Island Food Co-op on Orcas, the Lopez Community Land Trust on Lopez Island; and San Juan Island Distillery, Pelindaba Lavender and other farms on San Juan Island. You can also find farm-stay lodging at several farms, including Once in a Blue Moon Farm, Pebble Cove Farm, Laughing Moon Farm, and others.
