For simplicity, you can't beat walking on the ferry, which even provides a special area for your dog on the car deck. Be ready to board 30 minutes ahead of sailing time.
Year round, you can leave your car in the convenient lots at Anacortes ferry terminal and ride a Washington State ferry to any of the islands (no wait time). The San Juan Island ferry docks right in downtown Friday Harbor. If you're walking off the ferry without a bike on Orcas, Lopez, or Shaw, you'll need to arrange transport from the ferry ahead of time. Orcas has a taxi service and a rental car agency.
